At a recent planning session, The National Policy Advocacy Center of the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment came together to lay the groundwork for the upcoming First Circular Economy Conference and Exhibition.
The meeting began with reflections on earlier engagements, including past collaborations with other ministries such as the Ministry of Transport for the successful 2nd International Railway Conference. Drawing lessons from that experience, committee emphasized the importance of clear partnerships, shared responsibilities, and proper documentation.
A key highlight of the discussion was the need for an official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry and ACCI. It was agreed that the Ministry’s leadership would take the lead in signing letters and giving official recognition, while the Chamber would mobilize private sector participation and sponsorship.
Stakeholder engagement was also a central theme. The planning committee noted the importance of involving established players in the waste management and environmental sector, including private firms like Environmental Energy Limited (EEL). However, members cautioned against giving any single stakeholder exclusive control of the event, stressing that sponsorship packages should be categorized to allow broader participation.
On logistics, deliberations centered around the date and venue. After careful considerations of religious fasting in March and early April 2026 (lent & Ramadan) the committee agreed to shift the conference to April 21–22, 2025, after the Easter celebrations. Regarding the venue, Regarding the venue it was proposed by ACCI that their venue be used as the Prince Adetokunbo Kayode SAN, Trade and Convention Center ACCI is of the highest standard and will take care of both the conference and Exhibition components of the conference, while still open to other event venues such as International Conference Centre, Ladi Kwali Hall e.t.c as opinions depending on funds and sponsorship availability
The committee also highlighted the importance of media visibility and public awareness. It was resolved that subcommittees would be created for publicity, technical planning, sponsorship, and event management. These committees would comprise members from both the Ministry and ACCI, ensuring effective coordination and delivery.
In conclusion, the session successfully achieved its immediate objectives: setting a date, identifying a provisional venue, and outlining a framework for collaboration. The next steps will involve drafting the MOU, establishing subcommittees, and reaching out to potential sponsors and international partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), embassies, and donor agencies.
The planned conference is expected to create a platform for dialogue, innovation, and investment in Nigeria’s circular economy, positioning the country at the forefront of sustainable development in Africa.
